Exercising Together - Body Combat Class

Body Combat is a high-intensity, full body workout incorporating aspects of boxing, martial arts, and aerobics. The term was first coined by Les Mills. This class has been proven to be very effective and is similar to high-intensity interval training (HIIT). It takes the cardio kickboxing class to the next level.
Here are a few things to know about Body Combat…
It can be an intense aerobic exercise and is a high-calorie burning activity. According to research from Body Combat clubs, a person can burn on average 570-740 calories for every 55-minute Body Combat session. The amount of calories burned can vary considering factors such as age, weight and height.
This class can improve your stamina with similar results to running. This workouts is split into intervals, which helps maximize your heart and lung capacity. It is good for your cardiovascular health and aids in improving heart function, decreasing total cholesterol, and reducing blood pressure. The class is set to music and led by a certified instructor, which makes those 55 minutes fly by.
Body Combat is a great way to release stress through intense and energetic workouts. The activity provides an outlet to channel your inner warrior and get some negative energy out. Body Combat can also boost self-confidence and self-esteem because of the release of stress and improved physique. This makes Body Combat beneficial for your mental health as well.
Another benefit of Body Combat is strengthening the core. Body Combat is a type of training called “reactive core training.” Reactive core training focuses on strengthening core through your natural reflexes. Moves such as punches and blocks activate the core muscles you use in your everyday life.
Did you know that front kicks and alternating jabs require up to 1.6 times more core activation than regular crunches? A recent study at Penn State University also found core activation in a Body Combat class to be the equivalent of doing around 1700 crunches. Wow! That sounds way more fun than lying on the ground for those reps!
Body Combat is a non-contact workout, which reduces risk of the injury. The action sequences teach self-defense moves, which can be beneficial in emergency situations. No equipment needed other than wearing appropriate workout clothes and shoes.
Instructors receive new releases quarterly throughout the year so new music and moves help to keep the workouts fresh. There are many different options to accommodate people of all different levels. Check out our group fitness schedule for the next Body Combat class at Pullum Family YMCA!
