Health Hub - Tips for Managing High Outdoor Temperatures

August 1, 2025
As the summer heat intensifies, it's important to know more about the ways you can stay cool and safe from overheating.
- Stay hydrated. Some drinks won't help very much or can make you less hydrated, so avoid things that are sugary or caffeinated where you can.
- If you're sweating a lot, be sure to replenish salt and minerals with a light snack alongside water or a sports drink.
- Lightweight, loose clothing, preferably in light colors, will help you manage the heat better. Natural fibers (linen, cotton, etc.) breath much more easily than synthetics like polyester.
- Cool water on your skin can help you reach a comfortable temperature faster when you're trying to cool down.
- Food choices matter too. Light meals that are easy to digest will be a lot of help. Fruit isn't just tasty this time of year - it's also refreshing with good water content. And it's even better if you can keep it chilled.
- Try to keep peak hours for heat and sun in mind when you're making plans so that you can minimize the time you spend in high temperatures.
- Close blinds and curtains in your home during peak hours to lower the light and heat that's coming in, keeping the area cooler overall. Replacing incandescent light bulbs with LED bulbs will help you save on energy while also lowering the heat that your lights generate.
- Understand the warning signs of heat related illnesses, and what to do if you notice them in yourself or someone else. A quick response to overheating can save a life!
