Program Corner - Foundations of Basketball at the Y

History
March 1, 2025

As we wrap up our basketball season, I wanted to share some YMCA basketball history. YMCA basketball has a rich history that dates back to 1891, when Dr. James Naismith, a physical education instructor at the Springfield YMCA, invented the game.

The YMCA played a key role in spreading basketball across the U.S. and internationally, helping organize leagues, developing coaches and referees, and providing opportunities for youth to learn and compete. Over time, YMCA basketball became a foundation for amateur play, contributing to the growth of professional basketball.

Today, the YMCA continues to offer basketball programs that promote community, healthy living, and youth development. Our basketball program had 140 kids ages 2-12.
